    6.23.2007 ||>   Bye bye Comcast!

    As soon as Snuggles and I realized that we can get Verizon TV and internet, we jumped on it and scheduled an installation, so that we could cancel our crappy, crappy Comcast account. What we didn't realize was that, for a cheaper price, we can get three times the internet connection speed, and channels we never got with Comcast - channels we love.

    I was able to order Russia's Channel One (alas, there is no German channel), there is a vintage cartoon channel for Snuggles and the sweetest icing on the cake - CNN International. Let me say that watching CNN International is like watching the real CNN, the CNN that they will not show in the United States. It's like watching the real news again, after wading through the fake news crap that is spewed out in America day after day (and CNN America, I am looking at you too). No more will I be a slave to having to wade through the latest "missing blonde" or "child down the well" story to get through to what is really going on in the world. Very nice.

    As for the internet, so far so good. Verizon provides a modem/wireless router combo in the package, so that we can get rid of the clutter of our trusty Linksys, and get the wireless straight from the source. I am tinkering with it to make it more secure. It requires a WEP key to get on, but I am hoping to get the more secure WPA key added. We are also now running at 15mbps rather than 6 with Comcast.

    When I called to cancel, the guy sounded so sad that there was nothing he could do to keep us. But really, what does Comcast expect? They act as if they are the only provider out there and run themselves like a monopoly, but when people leave in droves they're confused? Their inability to take care of our service issues drove us nuts, and their service is more expensive. Their phone service started out being more expensive than Vonage, with no explanation other than "well, all the charges are on one bill." So what? It's worth it to pay $10 more a month to have one fewer bill that takes no effort to pay anyway? They also charge you $10 more a month if you don't order internet and TV together. It's no wonder that people are turning away from that.

    And so we are, and very happy about it. Au revoir, crappy service.
